Key Responsibilities:
- Command ships or provide engineering support for vessels engaged in transporting military equipment and supplies.

- Navigate open waters by applying maritime tools such as barometers, chronometers, and sextants to map courses across the ocean.

Typical Areas of Assignment Focus:
- Chief Mate: Head the deck department on a merchant vessel and serve as second in command. Primary responsibilities include overseeing cargo operations, maintaining vessel stability, and supervising the deck crew.
- Second Mate: In charge of navigation, responsible for maintaining charts and navigational equipment, and developing voyage plans under the direction of the Ship’s Master.
- Third Mate: The junior Officer of the ship, typically responsible for safety. Duties include managing firefighting equipment, lifeboats, and emergency systems, as well as overseeing a bridge or cargo watch.
Program Specific Requirements:
- License: Possess an active U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) unlimited officer license at the minimum level of Second Mate or Second Assistant Engineer with current Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) certifications.
- Qualifications: Licenses renewed for continuity or those for service on domestic, coastwise, or limited tonnages or horsepower do not qualify.

Who We’re Looking For:
We are seeking highly motivated professionals with expertise in maritime operations and vessel command. Ideal candidates meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
- Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and less than 42 years old at the time of commissioning. Prior qualifying service will be considered for year-for-year credit up to age 50. Waivers beyond age 54 will not be considered.
- Work Experience: Prior experience in traditional Mariner positions such as Chief Mate, Second Mate, or Third Mate is highly valued. Candidates with experience as civilian mariners in the Merchant Marine or related maritime fields are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Security Clearance: A security clearance may be required depending on the specific role and responsibilities. Applicants must be eligible to obtain a clearance if needed.
