As an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) in the Navy Medical Service Corps, you’ll focus on preventing and controlling diseases within Navy and Marine Corps populations. Your responsibilities will include assessing public health risks, developing countermeasures, and advising commanding officers on sanitation and health practices. Whether you’re managing environmental health programs ashore, afloat, or during deployments, your role will be vital to mission success and the well-being of military personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Environmental Health Assessment: Assess environmental hazards, such as food service sanitation, water safety, and disease control, and implement safety programs to protect servicemembers.
- Public Health Advising: Advise commanders on public health risks, including communicable diseases, thermal stress, and vector control, and create plans to mitigate these risks.
- Program Leadership: Oversee environmental health programs at Navy installations and during deployments, ensuring that operational environments are free from health risks.
As a Navy Reserve EHO, you’ll work across various areas of specialization, including bioterrorism defense, disease outbreak prevention, and biostatistical threat assessment, ensuring that our military personnel operate in safe and healthy environments.

Serving as a Navy Reserve Officer allows you to balance your civilian career with military service. With as few as two days a month and two weeks a year, you’ll have the flexibility to apply your environmental health expertise in a military setting while contributing to public health missions that matter. The Navy Reserve offers additional service opportunities, leadership roles, and career advancement, allowing you to serve with purpose while growing professionally.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen currently practicing in the United States.
- Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental health from an EHAC-accredited program, or a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in environmental health from a CEPH-accredited college.
- Age: Must be commissioned before the 42nd birthday (age waivers considered on a case-by-case basis).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification: Certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS) through the National Environmental Health Association or a state agency.
- Field Experience: Previous field experience in an environmental health-related occupation.
- Academic Excellence: Graduate-level coursework with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
