Why Become a Navy Reserve Industrial Hygienist?
As a Navy Industrial Hygiene Officer (IHO), you’ll assess workplace risks and provide recommendations to Navy Commanding Officers and other leaders. You’ll be instrumental in directing Navy programs related to Environmental and Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, and Safety, ensuring that Sailors’ workplaces are as safe and clean as possible. From conducting training and inspections aboard ships to advising on environmental health issues, your role will be critical in reducing injury and disease risks for Navy personnel worldwide.
Key Responsibilities:
- Workplace Risk Assessment: Identify and assess workplace hazards, including chemical, physical, and biological agents, and provide consult and recommendations to Navy leaders.
- Program Leadership: Lead Navy Environmental and Occupational Health programs, conducting inspections and implementing safety measures across various Navy settings.
- Technical Expertise: Provide technical expertise in research facilities, laboratories, and operational environments, developing controls and recommending personal protective equipment.
- Global Impact: Manage hygiene risks in working, living, and operating environments worldwide, ensuring the safety of Navy and Marine Corps personnel.
Your responsibilities may also include overseeing key Navy programs such as Occupational Exposure Assessment, Hearing Conservation, Heat Stress/Cold Injury, and Hazardous Material assessment and disposal, contributing to the overall mission readiness and safety of military personnel.

Serving as a Navy Reserve Officer allows you to maintain your civilian career while serving part-time in the Navy. With as few as two days a month and two weeks a year, you can apply your industrial hygiene expertise in a dynamic military setting while enjoying flexibility and additional service opportunities. Eligibility Requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen currently practicing in the United States.
- Education: Must have a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Industrial Hygiene, biology, chemistry, or a related field. A Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, engineering, toxicology, chemistry, biology, or environmental science with a focus on IH or occupational health is preferred.
- Age: Must be between the ages of 18 and 41 (age waivers considered on a case-by-case basis).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification: Certification in comprehensive practice of Industrial Hygiene (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
- Field Experience: Previous field experience as an Industrial Hygienist or Industrial Hygiene Technician.
- Academic Excellence: Minimum GPA of 3.0, with a strong background in chemistry, biology, and other relevant sciences.
